ARTES / CEEH Scholarships Awards (2025-2026)

Two scholarships offered by ARTES with the support of the CEEH have been granted:

Lauren Mahany, PhD student at the University of Edinburgh – 3000 £
The Catalonian Orientalist and costumbrismo painter Antonio Fabrés y Costa (1854-1938)

The award will initially be used to fund visits to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and archives in Barcelona and the Alhambra in Granada, and later the Real Academia de España in Rome and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma and the San Carlos Museum in Mexico. The aim is to investigate both artworks and primary sources, including an abundance of un-digitised letters, personal diaries and stored works to further the critical analysis of Fabrés’ costumbrismo iconographies in the context of socio-cultural conditions in late nineteenth-century Spain.

Juan A. González Delgado, PhD student at the University of Seville – 3000 £
The cartography and fortifications of Spanish military engineers in South America, 1700-1821

This dissertation analyses the production of Spanish engineers in the Viceroyalty of Peru, but also the point of view of English professionals between 1700 and 1821 through the documentation and plans in the archives and libraries in the United Kingdom, especially the British Library and British Museum, and the Bodleian Library and the Latin American Centre Library in Oxford. The aim is to assess the fortifications from a modern perspective and as the architecture of power, and as symbols of an empire.
